backIn this Body of Work, Rocks and Paper, I committed to paint one subject throughout the winter months while working in my studio. I spend most of the spring, summer and fall painting en plain air so it seemed fitting to bring the outdoors inside. I decided to bring the stones I love to collect inside and in this way merge landscape into still life. My original hope was to move toward abstraction. I added cut brown paper strips to offset the smaller, circular shapes of the stones. I wanted to see where this would take me. What would I learn from painting the same subject again and again? The short answer is that I found parameters –what I would call my limitations but also possibilities. Over the course of the winter I made 24 paintings and drawings. 11 are on display at the Robert LIncoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, NH from Sept. 4 through the 29th. All the works are included here, chronologically according to when they were painted.
